How Much Local Trivia Do You Know?

Fort Worth is a city with a story at every corner, blending Old West charm with a modern, thriving community. Whether you’re here for the history, the arts, or simply to enjoy the unique Texas spirit, you’ll find countless fascinating details that make our city one of a kind.

  1. Fort Worth began in 1849 as Camp Worth, a military outpost on the Trinity River named in honor of Gen. William Jenkins Worth, a hero of the Mexican-American War.
  2. The historic Stockyards Hotel once served as a hideout for the infamous Bonnie and Clyde, and today it’s known as one of the most haunted spots in the city.
  3. The USS Fort Worth (LCS-3) holds the distinction of being the first U.S. Navy ship named after the city. Commissioned in 2012, it was recently spared from decommissioning.
  4. Built in 1895 using Texas pink granite, the Tarrant County Courthouse was inspired by the Texas State Capitol — though it boasts a unique clock tower all its own.
  5. Fort Worth is home to the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive performed by real cowhands. These drives showcase longhorn steers, which can weigh up to 2,500 pounds.
  6. Thanks to the Barnett Shale, an underground reserve spanning 15 counties and containing 55 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, Fort Worth has more than 1,000 active gas wells.
  7. The “Light Bulb Methuselah” began burning backstage at the Old Byers Opera House on September 21, 1908. Now on display at the Stockyards Museum, it is the world’s second oldest continuously burning light bulb.
  8. Established in 1873, Hyde Park is the city’s oldest park — though Pendry’s World of Chiles and Spices has it beat by three years, opening in 1870.
  9. The Kimbell Art Museum houses works by masters such as El Greco, Cézanne, Rembrandt, Picasso, and Matisse, and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
  10. Approximately 60% of U.S. paper currency is printed at Fort Worth’s own Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
