How Much Local History Do You Know?

Crowley is located at the crossroads of Farm Roads 1187 and 731, just two miles west of Interstate 35 and about fifteen miles south of downtown Fort Worth. The area’s roots trace back to around 1848, when pioneers began farming near Deer Creek. The community’s first recorded burial took place in 1857, marking the early establishment of a close-knit settlement.

The town moved to its current location when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built livestock pens and laid tracks in the area. The first station depot was constructed in 1885, and the community was named after S. H. Crowley, the railroad’s master of transportation. A post office opened in 1882, and Crowley officially appeared as a town on the 1885 Railroad and County Map of Texas. Early economic activity centered around dairy farming, ranching, the railroad, and related businesses that supported the growing community.

By the early 1900s, Crowley was continuing to grow and develop its infrastructure. A Presbyterian church was established in 1895, and the post office moved to the Hayes brothers’ general store in 1896. The first school, a two-story concrete building, opened in 1905, serving 120 students by 1907. The Continental Bank and Trust Company began operations in 1907, further supporting local commerce. During World War II, Crowley set a per capita record for purchasing U.S. Defense Bonds, reflecting the town’s strong sense of patriotism and community spirit.

Crowley’s official incorporation came on February 3, 1951, with “Chick” Race serving as the first elected mayor from 1953 to 1957. Incorporation enabled the town to establish essential services, including a water system, natural gas, and a sewage system throughout the 1960s. In 1972, the town council voted to change Crowley’s designation from town to city. A park board was formed in 1971 to manage ten acres of donated land, providing recreational space for residents. The population grew steadily from 275 in the late 1920s to over 8,000 by 1990, reflecting Crowley’s evolution into a vibrant and growing city that continues to thrive today.
